Rev. Michał Kubacki
“Father Kubacki and his housekeeper were extremely kind to me. […] I used to visit father Kubacki every day; he taught me religion, articles of faith and prayers. He was an honest, high-minded man who respected my background and never forced me into anything”, wrote Halina Aszkenazy-Engelhardt.
The girl escaped from a transport to Majdanek. With her mother’s approval, she approached father Michał Kubacki, a vicar at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
“I sat in the pew, […] Suddenly, I felt dizzy and fainted. When I came round I saw someone bending over me – he was tall, grey haired, with gentle blue eyes […]. ‘What happened?’, he asked. ‘What are you doing here my child?’. He made sure I was not hungry, he then searched for a birth certificate for me. Within several minutes I owed something that tens of thousands of Jews had been fighting for. A document worth a lot of money.”
